FAQ

Is hospice care covered by insurance?

Yes. Hospice care is typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. We’re here to guide you through the financial process so it feels clear and manageable, not overwhelming.

Can I continue to see my primary doctor?

Absolutely. You can keep seeing your primary care physician while receiving hospice care, and we’ll work closely with them to make sure everything is coordinated.

When should we consider hospice?

It’s best to consider hospice sooner than most people think. Many wait until the final days, but this can mean missing out on weeks or months of comfort, support, and quality time together. Serious illness can quickly take away the ability to communicate, leaving loved ones to make difficult choices under stress. Research in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society shows that families often delay hospice, even though starting earlier can mean fewer hospital stays, better symptom control, and more meaningful moments at home.

If someone has a life-limiting illness and treatments are no longer working or feel too burdensome, it’s time to have the hospice conversation. Early enrollment allows more time to focus on what truly matters: comfort, dignity, and connection.

What if my loved one improves?

Hospice care is flexible. If a patient’s condition improves or stabilizes, they can choose to leave hospice care. If they need it again later, re-enrollment is always an option.

Can hospice care be provided at home?

Yes. Hospice care can happen wherever you feel most comfortable: at home, in an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or a dedicated hospice center. The goal is always the same: to bring comfort to the place that feels like “yours.”

Can hospice benefit dementia patients?

Yes. Hospice can be an excellent support for people with dementia. They’ll receive 24/7 access to care, compassionate guidance, and expertise from our trained professionals.

Is hospice only for six months?

No. Care can continue beyond six months if a medical director or physician confirms that the patient is still terminally ill. During that time, we meet nutritional, social, and medication needs while providing ongoing medical attention that can sometimes extend quality time.

Can a patient leave hospice?

Yes. Patients can leave hospice whenever they choose, often because their health has improved and they want to pursue curative treatments. If their condition changes later, they can return to hospice care at any time.

How does hospice help with pain support?

Pain management is a central part of hospice care. Expert Hospice’ expert team is available 24/7 and trained in advanced techniques to keep patients as comfortable as possible.

We work closely with patients and families to create pain management plans that honor each person’s comfort level, allowing patients to decide how much medication they receive based on their own experience of pain. We also address emotional, social, and spiritual discomfort, creating a truly holistic circle of care.
